Birkhill Bridge on the outskirts of Coalburn has been closed for eight weeks to allow "vital" regeneration work to be carried out.
The bridge, which carries the C13 road east of Coalburn approximately 150 metres west of the B7078 Carlisle Road, was closed on 7 January so that it can be "brought up to modern standards".
Vehicles will now be diverted through Lesmahagow.
Work carried out will include replacing the existing masonry arch on the bridge with a reinforced concrete deck.
This, says South Lanarkshire Council, will allow the bridge to meet modern traffic loading and vehicle containment capacity restrictions.
A new steel parapet and barrier arrangement is also to be installed.
Councillor Chris Thompson, the chair of the council's Enterprise Resources Committee, said: "We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these essential road works may cause.
"Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum and I would ask that road users follow the diversion which will be clearly signposted."
