Many design companies have come across the vexed problem of having too much to fit in to a small space.
When the A Proctor Group were commissioned to make a fridge for a client's yacht, they had to make it as thermally efficient as possible in a very restricted space.
The yacht Lynn Rival, owned by Paul and Rachel Chandler, now boasts a bespoke top-opening fridge, manufactured for the exact space it needed to fit into.
Using Spacetherm thermal insulation, the A Proctor Group gave the fridge a heat transfer coefficient (U0value) of 0.22 W/m2K with 60mm of thermal material.
Six layers of the Spacetherm Aerogel Blanket gave the fridge all the insulation it needed.
This thermally conductive material can also be bonded to doors, shutters, swimming pool covers and other places where insulation is required at minimum thickness.
But the fridge faced other challenges: being on a yacht, it might potentially have to withstand waters from the sea.
So designers included Spectraplan, a highly durable membrane, resistant to most sea fluids.
A company spokesperson said: "This project yet again showcases the A. Proctor Group's ability to successfully deliver engineered solutions for demanding applications and requirements in varied markets."
The A Proctor Group anticipates that this insulation will stay active for 60 years.
