The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde is to be knighted for services to education, engineering and the economy.
Professor Jim McDonald is an expert on electricity supply, power networks, distributed generation and new/ renewable energy.
He has a wealth of experience in business, research and as an adviser.
Professor McDonald has co-authored more than 600 journal/ conference papers and is Chairman of the Institute for Energy and Environment, the largest power engineering and energy systems research group in the world.
He also heads up the Scotland Research Partnership in Engineering, co-chairs the Energy Advisory Board in Scotland and is a member of the UK Trade and Investment Energy Excellence Board.
The Queen’s Birthday Honours List, out at the end of last week, recognised several other notable Scots for their contributions to the energy and construction industries.
James MacRae Campbell, who is the Director of the Energy Development Unit at the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change, was appointed CBE, it was announced.
Peter William Mark Carroll of Argyll and Bute will receive an OBE for his work as a Nuclear Security Principal at the UK Global Threat Recution Programme.
And Dr Lori Barbara McElroy of Glasgow will receive an OBE for services to sustainable building design.
Dr McElroy is the director of Sust., Scotland’s first web site dedicated to sustainable architecture and the built environment.
Sust. offers small grants for projects including design innovation, trains local authorities and housing associations and educates the general public about the importance of sustainable design.
