Stirling’s new £330,000 Health Skills Centre in the School of Nursing Midwifery and Health, will be officially opened by Scotland’s Chief Nursing Officer, Ros Moore, on 14 December.

The new Health Skills Centre will allow Stirling students to benefit from training in a hospital-like environment consisting of a four bed ward, intensive care area, multipurpose area and a domestic area for developing communication skills. Life-sized anatomical educational human models, called manikins, will be used as patients and the facility is covered by video cameras so that students can be filmed and coached during skills practice.

The University has also invested in the development of immersive virtual reality software in the learning zone, which will come on stream in spring 2012.

Professor William Lauder, Head of the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health said: "We are delighted that the Chief Nursing Officer will officially open our new Health Skills Centre and will see the valuable training that will be undertaken here to help produce nursing staff of the highest calibre.

"This University investment demonstrates a commitment to the long term future of nursing education at Stirling. The centre also provides a platform for our world-leading nurse education research."
