Over 40 Skateboarders, BMX bikers and In-line Skaters were carving, airwalk grabbing and rocking and rolling at St Joseph’s Academy for the launch of East Ayrshire’s new Mobile Skatepark.
This hotly anticipated project, which was developed by the Leisure Development section with helpful advice from Kilmarnock Skateboard Group (KSG), was literally rolled out under the bright lights of St Joseph’s car park.
KSG, which was set up in 2010 with support from East Ayrshire Council’s Community Learning and Development Department, were instrumental in the acquisition of the skatepark which consists of a range of ramps, grind rails and tables which fold together to fit onto a trailer. The trailer itself is a major part of the equipment as it folds out to create a three sided table with grind box.
Chris Mooney, Chair of KSG said: “The Mobile Skatepark is a great piece of equipment which offers us a good opportunity to grow the sports of Skateboarding, BMX & In-line skating. The KSG aim is to get a static Skatepark built within Kilmarnock and being able to grow demand for it may encourage investment from private businesses!”
Leader of the Council, Councillor Douglas Reid commented: “The Mobile Skatepark will make a great addition to East Ayrshire Council’s innovative diversionary sports portfolio. There is no doubt that many communities in East Ayrshire have shown a demand for this type of activity and to be able to provide a custom built mobile skatepark will allow every community to benefit!”
