East Lothian Council is investing almost £2 million in 14 new homes for rent in Macmerry. Work is due to start in September and is expected to take less than a year to complete.
Local firm Hart Builders has been awarded the contract to build the new homes, on Council-owned ground allocated for housing in the Local Plan, at the end of Whiteloch Road on the outskirts of the village.
Councillor Stuart Currie, Cabinet Member for Housing and Community Safety, said: "This is another stage in the council's house building programme, which aims to address the demand for homes for rent in East Lothian.
"Our housing stock was decimated by the amount of properties bought under Right to Buy legislation, meaning that we have far more people in need of rented council homes than we have properties available. I'm delighted that we're about to start on another development which will take us closer to meeting that demand."
David Small, Managing Director of Hart Builders, said: "We are pleased to be involved at Whiteloch Road, Macmerry. This development will provide 14 desperately needed houses and demonstrates East Lothian Council’s commitment to addressing the requirement to deliver more affordable homes for rent throughout the county."
The site will include four two-bedroom flats; two three-bedroom houses designed for four people; six three-bedroom houses designed for five people; one three bedroom wheelchair-standard bungalow and one two bedroom wheelchair-standard bungalow.
