Price Freeze For GHA Tenants

GHA tenants will see their home contents insurance premiums frozen for the next three years.

Scotland’s biggest social landlord has secured a new deal with insurer Aviva for one of the cheapest tenants’ home contents insurance schemes in the UK.

The deal means premiums, which have not increased since 2005, will now stay the same until 2014.

Premiums for tenants over the age of 60 start at £18.72 a year for £5,000 of cover – which works out at only 36 pence per week.

Cover for younger tenants remains from only £30.16 per year – or 58 pence each week – for £8,000 of cover.

The new deal with Aviva also allows tenants to top up their basic cover for an additional premium. Cover for accidental damage in the home and for pedal cycles, personal belongings, wheelchairs or even their hearing aids while outside the home is available.

More than 10,500 GHA tenants have already signed up to the scheme to give them the peace of mind the protection brings.

GHA’s Insurance Manager Rory Brown said: “As a landlord we’re responsible for insuring the buildings, but not the personal belongings and contents in them.

“Many of our tenants think fires and burst pipes will never affect them, but the worst can, and sometimes does, happen. For example, the number of burst pipe claims almost doubled during the cold winter spell.

“We believe our tenants have access to one of the best all-round UK home contents policies specifically designed for tenants in social housing.”

GHA tenants who want to sign up can contact one of their local Tenant Engagement Officers, visit their local office or call the Customer Service Centre on 0800 470 7979.

Karen Arthur, from Aviva’s Tenants Contents Unit, said: “We are delighted to extend our relationship with GHA for another three years. We look forward to continuing to work with GHA, promoting the importance of home insurance to tenants throughout Glasgow.”
