Space Experts Invest In Recycling Technology

Scotland’s leading workplace design company is leading a major recycling drive which is set to save it - and dozens of other Scottish companies - tens of thousands of pounds in annual waste disposal costs.

Space Solutions Operations Division which manages relocations and installations for furniture companies will invest £100,000 over the next five years on a state-of-the-art bailing machinery at its central operations base at The Hub in Livingston, which will be used to help improve recycling across the firm’s Scottish operations.

The device will create quarter-tonne bales of plastic and cardboard on site at The Hub, which can be better stored in the facility before being transported for recycling.

The move will improve waste management at the facility having been specifically sourced to complement the company’s wider drive to improve its ethical, social, environmental and sustainable business practices.

Derek Bateman, who heads Space Solutions operations in Livingston, said: “The company has enjoyed considerable ongoing growth and with this has led to large volumes of mixed waste cardboard, plastic and polystyrene for disposal.

“At the moment, we have about 20 tonnes of waste at The Hub so this new machine will help compact it all and make it easier to store and transport for recycling and by following this investing in new equipment and offering new services to clients , we’ve been able to dramatically cut our waste disposal and transport costs.

“We work to strict ISO14001 standards and are proud of our commitment to sustainable and environmental work practices. This new method of waste management will help strengthen those credentials, reduce our carbon footprint and ensure that we remain at the forefront of eco-friendly business in Scotland.

“While we are acquiring this waste by working with companies, we are responsible for the waste removal – but we hope these business will also welcome that we are removing the waste in an efficient manner.

“We are also extending the service to neighbouring companies based in the Deans South West Industrial area of Livingston.”
