Campbeltown Museum will be closed to the public for a period of four to six weeks from Monday May 24.
The closure will allow the roof, which has leaked for some time, to be properly repaired.
Councillor Neil Mackay, Argyll and Bute’s spokesperson for Arts, Culture, Leisure and Sport, said the work was badly needed.
“The repairs will include replacement of all the glass in the skylights with a special reflective glass which will control both the amount of light and heat coming into the gallery on hot, sunny days and the amount of heat going out on cold ones,” he added.
“This will create a better environment in which to store and display the precious items of Campbeltown's history which the museum holds.”
The work is part of the council's 2010/11capital programme.
The authority will make a further announcement later in the summer when the museum is ready for re-opening.
