A leading Scottish energy lawyer has backed Coalition Government environmental proposals for the delivery of a low carbon eco-friendly economy.
Alan Simpson, partner in the energy and climate change team of international law firm, HBJ Gateley Wareing, welcomed the Coalition Government’s green agenda to deliver a low carbon economy.
Speaking in advance of the All-Energy Conference – the UK’s largest renewable energy event - in Aberdeen on 19th and 20th May, Alan welcomed the moves and called for quick implementation of actions in the Queens’ Speech at the end of May, saying: “The green agenda being promoted by the Coalition Government is to be applauded and the quick implementation of the measures can only serve to assist the UK in reaching its renewable energy targets and delivering a low carbon economy.
“Moves such as the continued delivery of feed-in-tariffs, where energy suppliers make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources, and the introduction of smart meters into every home, is greatly welcomed. Measures such as feed-in-tariffs provide superb investment opportunities for renewable energy schemes, effectively subsidizing the producer.
“In addition, the delivery of a green investment bank will ensure money is available for new wind farms and renewable energy projects, and an upgraded national grid will assist renewable energy producers in the UK access the market more efficiently.”
'Green measures' to be brought forward by the new Coalition Government include a 'pay as you save scheme' that allows people to take out a loan for home improvements and repay it by savings from lower fuel bills, the introduction of a smart grid and the roll out of smart meters and those who generate their own electricity through solar panels or wind turbines will be paid for any extra they feed into the grid through a 'feed-in tariff'.
