Work has started to build 12 new houses in Finstown in the first stage of a programme to build 125 new Council houses across Orkney over the next three years.
Work began on-site in February and the first foundations have been laid.
Construction has also started on site at Andersquoy in Kirkwall for 18 flats. Other new build projects expected to start shortly include:
• Petticoat Lane, Orphir (two houses)
• Makerhouse Lane, Dounby (four houses)
• Garson, Stromness (fifteen houses)
The contract to build the houses in Finstown and associated infrastructure was awarded to local firm R Clouston Ltd in October last year.
Chair of the Council’s Social Services and Housing Committee, Councillor Roderick McLeod, said: “Increasing the number of affordable houses in Orkney is a key priority for the Council. The work at Finstown will be a welcome sight for the many people on a waiting list for a Council house.”
Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said: “This is great news for Orkney and those in the community looking for affordable rented housing.
“The provision of quality affordable homes is crucial to ensure the survival of our island communities. It helps to house and retain the local population.
“Local authorities across Scotland have embraced the opportunity to apply for funding to help reverse decades of decline in council house building.
"This Government is determined to boost Scotland's stock of good quality affordable housing while helping to safeguard jobs and provide new employment opportunities.”
