A new care home for older people will be built on the former site of Drum Brae Primary School in Edinburgh.
This will be the fifth new care home that the Council has developed as part of its strategy for providing a high quality care environment.
All the Council's new care homes have been designed to a high specification and include activity rooms, hairdressing rooms and support facilities.
Councillor Paul Edie, Health, Social Care and Housing Convener for Edinburgh, said: "I am delighted that a vacant school site will become a new care home for older people. The new home will allow residents the opportunity to stay in excellent accommodation, which meets their needs.
"As a Council we are committed to offering high quality residential care for older people in the City and I am confident this project will deliver first class accommodation."
Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, Children and Families Convener for Edinburgh said: "It's fantastic that the old site of Drum Brae Primary School is being put to good use so quickly. The site will provide an excellent base for a new care home to be built while delivering a vital service for older people within the City.
"It is important that older people have choice in the care they receive and I’m sure this new home will be delivered to the highest quality."
It is planned that the new care home will be ready for occupation by the end of 2012.
