British Waterways Scotland has announced that the Crinan Canal will be closed between 14th December 2009 and 15th March 2010.
Argyll and Bute Council said the closure is necessary in order to undertake essential engineering work to repair an embankment leak found between Bellanoch Bridge and the eastern end of Bellanoch Bay.
The leak has been monitored on a daily basis since its discovery, and checks indicate no settlement in the bank or increase in leakage. Prior to the closure, the local waterway team has been proactive in reducing the leakage by about half through temporary measures.
The repair work will have some impact on users of the Bellanoch to Crinan Road, as it will necessitate bringing in construction machinery. Whilst the road will remain open at all times, there will be a reduction to one traffic lane at some points.
British Waterways Scotland has pledged to work hard to minimise this disruption and update those using the road on restrictions as and when it has confirmed dates and times.
The company may also need to carry out ground investigations to help enable the works, and this will involve closing the towpath between Bellanoch Bridge and Bellanoch Bay. Again, if the work goes ahead, British Waterways Scotland will ensure that the local community is kept updated.
British Waterways Scotland has apologised in advance for any inconvenience caused during this repair programme.
