A significant regeneration project at the entrance to Ravenscraig Walled Garden in Kirkcaldy is now almost complete, successfully transforming land that had been derelict for over 15 years into a vibrant community asset.
The comprehensive works were primarily backed by over £1.24 million from the Scottish Government’s Vacant and Derelict Land Funding, along with contributions from the Kirkcaldy Area Committee and the Crown Estate.
The redevelopment focuses on restoring historic buildings and creating new spaces to support training and community engagement.
• The former plant nursery has been redeveloped by Rural Skills Scotland (RSS) into a Skills Hub, which will host national apprenticeship and employability programmes.
• The project includes the careful restoration of the historic Stone Sheds, managed by Fife Historic Buildings Trust.
• A new traditional timber and glass greenhouse is scheduled for installation in early 2026.
Councillor Ian Cameron, Convenor of the Kirkcaldy Area Committee, hailed the investment as a "fantastic example of how we can breathe new life into derelict land and deliver real benefits for local people," creating a welcoming space that reflects the garden's historic character.
Stewart Christie, Director at Rural Skills Scotland Ltd, stated that the transformation has created a "dynamic, sustainable base" for their social enterprise to expand. The investment has already enabled them to employ 12 local people and will open up new training opportunities to help more individuals secure meaningful work.
Deborah Kent, Project Officer at Fife Historic Buildings Trust, noted that the project allowed them to put community wealth building into action, ensuring the Stone Sheds were made wind and watertight using traditional skills and materials.
The site improvements are set to enhance the appearance of the garden and provide new opportunities for volunteering and future community activities. A formal launch event is planned for Spring 2026 once the greenhouse is installed.
