Construction has commenced on a major new affordable housing development in Whitehill, Hamilton, delivered by The JR Group on the former St. Paul's Church site on Back Muir Road.
The project, being developed on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council and supported by the Scottish Government's Affordable Housing Supply Programme, will provide 24 high-quality council homes.
The development consists of 12 one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom flats. These homes are purposely designed to meet a variety of local housing needs, including properties suitable for older residents and individuals with mobility challenges, alongside homes for general needs tenants.
Andrew Dallas, Projects Director for The JR Group, emphasised the project's importance in tackling the national housing crisis: "The development at Backmuir Road is a vital step forward in delivering high quality affordable social homes on a brownfield site in South Lanarkshire."
Councillor Davie McLachlan, Chair of the council's Housing and Technical Resources Committee, joined representatives from The JR Group to mark the start of construction. He stated that the new flats will be a "welcome addition" to the council's housing stock, providing variety that meets local needs while maintaining affordability and value for money.
The Backmuir Road site is located centrally, offering good connections to public transport, schools, and local amenities. Construction is expected to take around 16 months, with the new homes anticipated for completion in early 2027.
