Network Rail is investing more than £1m in the Stranraer line this month, delivering a package of upgrades aimed at cutting disruption and improving reliability for passengers.
From 28 November to 8 December, engineers will carry out major drainage enhancements along targeted sections of track, using over 2,000 tonnes of materials to reduce flooding risk and keep services dependable. Markdh No.1 Level Crossing will be upgraded, with inspections also planned for structures and embankments.
The programme underpins a drive to strengthen the route's long‑term resilience, safeguarding a vital transport link for the south west.
Ross Moran, route director at Network Rail Scotland, said: "We're investing in essential improvements to help keep this route reliable for the communities that depend on it. Strengthening drainage and inspecting key assets will help make the line more resilient to Scotland's challenging weather, ensuring services can continue to run smoothly.
"We know this work means short term changes to journeys, and we apologise for any inconvenience it will cause. Our teams will be working hard to complete the upgrades as quickly and safely as possible, and we appreciate passengers' patience while we deliver this important project."
While the works take place, buses will replace trains between Ayr and Stranraer from the end of service on Friday 28 November until the start of service on Monday 8 December. Rail replacement buses will also operate between Kilwinning and Ayr on Sunday 30 November.
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said: "ScotRail is committed to keeping customers moving while Network Rail completes this essential work between Ayr and Stranraer.
"A robust rail replacement plan will be in place to ensure people can continue to travel reliably throughout the works.
"We'll provide clear, up-to-date information to help customers plan their journeys and travel with confidence, and we're grateful for their patience and understanding while these important improvements are carried out."
