Scottish Water is playing its part in the Central and North Fife economy with the completion of its £4.3m improvement programme at the Glenfarg Water Treatment Works (WTW).

The project was carried out by construction partners Black & Veatch.

The team proved their credentials recently, lifting gold at the prestigious Considerate Constructor Awards for this exemplary project, beating 7000 other UK sites. They walked away with the top prize – 'Most Considerate Site 2009'. This was in addition to their two Scottish Water awards.

Central Fife MSP, Tricia Marwick said: "It is important that we encourage all companies to deliver the best possible quality of product to their customers. Scottish Water's award winning investment at the Glenfarg Water Treatment Works is clearly an example of that and they are to be applauded for their efforts in delivering clearer, fresher drinking water across Central Fife now and for generations to come."

The improvement programme was carried out by Scottish Water Solutions (SWS), the project delivery arm of Scottish Water. Solutions is an innovative joint venture partnership which includes some of the countries largest civil engineering companies. Already it has delivered more than £1bn worth of infrastructure and non infrastructure projects during this current investment period.

B&V site manager George Smart believes the real reward is knowing that this investment will deliver significant benefits across the kingdom: "This £4.3m investment will deliver clearer, fresher drinking water to 180,000 customers, right across Fife, for decades to come. We have modernised the works, making it fit for the demands of 21st century water treatment.

Project Manager, Steve Mason added: "This has been a significant project and one we are proud of, having picked up this prestigious Considerate Contractors award. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their support and patience while this important programme of work was carried out. They have played an important role in the success of this project."

The investment at Glenfarg WTW will improve the quality of drinking water to communities from Glenrothes to Levenmouth and Kinross to Kirkcaldy. Customers in Cupar, St Andrews and other parts of North East Fife will also appreciate the benefits, with Glenfarg water also being mixed with their Lomond Hills supply.
