Refurbishment work started this week on the £200,000 pedestrian underpass below King Street at Limonds Wynd in Ayr.

The work which will be completed in April includes new brick wall cladding, new metal parapets and handrails, replacement street lighting, anti-slip pavements, improvements to drainage and installation of CCTV cameras.

South Ayrshire Councillor Peter Convery, the Council's Portfolio Carrier for Sustainability and the Environment met with local Councillors and the contractor at the underpass on the day the work commenced.

Councillor Convery said: "For everyone in the local community including parents and carers with children in prams, school children, older people and those with disabilities it is much safer to use the underpass rather than attempt to cross a very busy dual carriageway. The refurbishment will make the underpass safer and more user friendly and I believe that this will encourage more people to use it.

"The changes at the underpass will make it easier for the Council's small street sweeping vehicles to access the underpass. The changes will also make the underpass easier to maintain in the future."

It is anticipated that the refurbishment will be completed in April 2009.
