North Ayrshire Council are to seek Scottish Government funding for a new generation of council houses.
If it succeeds the Council will give the go-ahead for the first council housing development in its area for 27 years.
The Council's Executive decided this week to apply for a share of a £25m Government fund to build more affordable housing in its area.
Councillor David O'Neill, Council Leader, welcomed the opportunity to bid for a share of the fund.
The number of houses built will be relatively small, probably no more than a dozen.
"We need to be a bit more innovative in meeting the needs of our community, particularly at a time when people are facing economic difficulties,” said Councillor O'Neill.
"A bid will send a very positive message to our residents that we are aware of their housing needs."
The last Council estate built in North Ayrshire was at Gretto Falls Avenue, Largs, a small development of 16 houses.
