Protective crash bollards are to be built outside Glasgow's subway stations to protect against terrorist attacks.

Protective bollards will be made of reinforced concrete and will be sited at the edge of the pavements outside all stations to block any car or vehicle from going through the entrance of the subways in a similar style to the attack on Glasgow airport last year.

Donnie MacLeod, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport's head of security, said: "The installation of bollards outside the entrances to Subway stations is the latest step in our programme of security enhancements.

"They will add another layer to measures already in place by protecting station concourses from vehicle access."

Glasgow based Luddon Construction have submitted a £271,000 tender to carry out the work which is likely to last around 17 weeks.

An SPT spokeswoman said: "We are keen to make the stations safe and comfortable for everybody to use. We have been doing risk assessment and as part of that we have been looking at what happened at Glasgow Airport."

As part of the terror attack at Glasgow airport last year a 4x4 Jeep Cherokee was driven into one of the entrance doors at the main terminal building.
