Students Excel At Historic Scotland Conservation Awards

Two conservation students' studies have been given a boost after their hard work was rewarded by Historic Scotland.

Daniel Baillie, 20, and Philip Stafford, 22, attended a prize giving at the agency's headquarters last month after excelling in the Higher National Diploma in Architectural Conservation at Glasgow's Metropolitan College.

Daniel, from Falkirk, has won a bursary and collection of books on conservation techniques to help complete his studies and a placement with Historic Scotland's Technical Conservation Group for winning the title of best student.

He said: "Working in construction is something that I have been interested in since I left school and I have really enjoyed doing my HND."

Philip, who lives in Glasgow, also received a collection of books for being the most improved student, which will come in handy as he follows in his dad's footsteps.

He added: "Next week I begin a Building Surveyors Degree Course at Glasgow Caledonian University. The technical and hands on experience of traditional construction methods I have gained on the HND will particularly help me in the future, and I will go straight into the second year of the degree course to continue my studies which is another of the benefits."

Speaking at the prize giving, Historic Scotland Director of the Technical Conservation Group David Mitchell said: "Both Daniel and Philip have worked very hard and have shown great enthusiasm for building conservation. We are very pleased to work closely with Glasgow Metropolitan on this project as it recognises the only course of its kind in Scotland. Many of the students go on to work in the construction and building sectors, and the knowledge they have gained at Glasgow Metropolitan means they are better equipped to deal with traditionally constructed buildings."

Paul Lowne, Leader of the Architectural Conservation course, added: "Both Philip and Daniel are a credit to the Glasgow Metropolitan College and particularly to the HND Architectural Conservation course. We wish them well in their future careers."
