Temporarily Opening Of Usher Hall Cost £900K

Opening the Usher Hall temporarily for the Fringe festival has cost the Edinburgh Council around £900,000.

The £20m revamp has been delayed and the hall is now closed due to problems with the structure.

Director of corporate services, Jim Inch, said: "The effect of the temporary works on the corporate services budget is an additional £900,000. Taking into account other pressures on the budget, and savings identified to contain these, the department's residual estimated overspend is £304,000."

The hall will not reopen until next year; the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) will now receive around £400,000 in compensation from the council.
