A luxury mansion in Edinburgh could be on course to become Scotland's first £5m house.

The seven-bedroom house in the plush Grange Loan area of the city has been put on the market at a starting price of £3.5m.

However, Strutt & Parker - the estate agents handling the sale - claim the hot property could end up breaking the £5m barrier.

Langham House was built in 1880, during the latter part of the Victorian era. The property has six reception rooms and nine bathrooms. The swanky 10,000 sq ft home - a former nursing home and company HQ - also boasts a cinema, a 45ft kitchen and a games room.

While there have been sporting estates that have gone for in excess of £5m, the most paid for a house on its own in Scotland was £4.95m for Rangers chairman Sir David Murray's B-listed mansion in Edinburgh's Barnton.

Such a sale would be in line with Edinburgh's reputation as the dominant city for top-price houses. In 2007, 146 £1m-plus homes were sold in the city - 52% of the entire list.
