Motorists Warned Of Diversions As Essential Bridge Work Is Carried Out

The Bothwell Street off-ramp at the Kingston Bridge, Glasgow, will close on June 14 for 20 weeks to enable Transport Scotland to invest £4.5m on necessary, major resurfacing and repairs.

The work which is being managed and supervised by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland involves replacing worn parts of the bridge and resurfacing its deck.

Glasgow City Council is handling the associated traffic management plans and diversion routes and has worked closely with Transport Scotland and Amey to minimise the impact on both the motorway and surrounding roads.

Around 10,000 motorists use the Bothwell Street off-ramp everyday. Land and Environmental Services have made improvements to road junctions and traffic signals at St Vincent Street, Woodlands Road and St Georges Cross to ease congestion during the closure.

Robert Booth, Executive Director of Land and Environmental Services, said: "The Council's priority here is to ensure that the inevitable impact on the travelling public is minimised. These improvements to road junctions and traffic signals will certainly help ease congestion during the closure. We shall be monitoring traffic patterns and adjusting signal timings accordingly, to minimise delays. Our advice to road users is to take alternative routes, allow extra time for journeys or, where possible, use other modes of transport."

Bill Valentine from Transport Scotland said: "This section of the motorway is a key link to the city centre. These works are essential to ensure the off-ramp remains in optimum condition for years to come. We are investing substantially in this section of the network and ask drivers to be patient and consider the long term benefits of this short term inconvenience."

Willie Watson, Amey's unit manager for southwest Scotland, said: "A great deal of planning and partnership working has taken place to help ensure that traffic flows smoothly through these works. We tested several traffic management options and selected the optimum layout to keep drivers moving."
