North Lanarkshire Council's Your Heritage in Focus programme is launching a project to bring the history of Gartcosh Steel Works to life.

Residents, former steelworkers, families and local history enthusiasts are encouraged to share memories and help document the mill and the village shaped by it.

The initiative aims to protect, preserve and promote North Lanarkshire’s industrial heritage by capturing first-hand accounts from one of Scotland’s most significant steelworking communities.

The series begins with a free Heritage Social on Saturday 12 September, from 2pm to 6pm, at Gartcosh Works Social Club. Visitors can enjoy screenings of evocative film footage of the mill alongside personal stories, recollections and anecdotes from those with first-hand experience of life and work at Gartcosh Steel Works. The drop-in event will run on an hourly repeat, with refreshments available throughout the afternoon.

A public exhibition follows at Gartcosh Community Facility from Thursday 15 October to Sunday 18 October 2026, with free entry. Curated by local researcher John Carroll, the showcase is the culmination of a year-long effort to gather photographs, stories and memories from former employees and their families, presenting a powerful portrait of the steelworks and the community connected to it.
