Significant upgrades to Edinburgh Road in Bathgate are scheduled to start next month.

The project will see the full carriageway resurfaced and a segregated two-way cycleway constructed.

Following a competitive tender process, contractors have been appointed and confirmed a site start on 21 September 2026, with an outline construction programme of approximately 24 weeks.

The new cycleway will run from the railway bridge at Blackburn Road to the west side of King Street Car Park. Several uncontrolled crossing points will be replaced with new controlled crossings. This element is predominantly funded through Transport Scotland’s Active Travel Infrastructure Fund, which is ring-fenced for active travel improvements.

The entire carriageway and most of the southern footway—around 1.2 km—will also be resurfaced between Guildiehaugh Roundabout and the crossing at King Street Car Park. The whole of Guildiehaugh Roundabout will be resurfaced as part of the works, funded by West Lothian Council.

Works will be delivered in three phases, starting at the east end at Guildiehaugh Roundabout and progressing west. Traffic management arrangements and details of future phases will be communicated ahead of each stage. The 24-week timescale largely relates to installing new kerb lines, traffic signals, street lighting, removing existing traffic islands and resetting ironwork. Resurfacing in each section will take less time, but traffic management will remain in place throughout to ensure safe and efficient working.

The start date is slightly later than first anticipated due to procurement and contract award timescales for this major scheme. Although procurement has been under way since March, tender returns, evaluation and contract award took a little longer to ensure best value for the council. Traffic Regulation Orders for road redetermination and new waiting restrictions have been progressing since February.
