Argyll and Bute Council is set to carry out essential repairs to the ferry slip at Port Askaig, which serves the Islay–Jura route.

Work is scheduled to start today, Monday 24 August 2026. The programme includes removing and replacing damaged steel wear strips, alongside local concrete repairs and resurfacing of sections of the slip.

Throughout the project, the Jura ferry will operate via the linkspan, allowing the works to proceed safely and efficiently. The plans have been developed with CalMac and other stakeholders to minimise disruption and maintain ferry connectivity between Islay and Jura.

Council teams will deliver the repairs and, wherever possible, schedule activities around the published CalMac timetable to keep services running during the works.

Port Askaig is a busy working harbour, particularly over the summer months. The project has been carefully considered to meet the needs of ferry operators, harbour users, local businesses, residents and visitors. Every effort will be made to complete the repairs safely, effectively and efficiently while keeping normal harbour operations in place.

Works will include:

- Removal of damaged steel wear strips;

- Installation of new steel wear strips;

- Localised concrete repair works;

- Concrete resurfacing to areas of the ferry slip; and

- Associated inspections and finishing works.

Ferry services are expected to operate as normal while the works are under way, although harbour users may notice increased activity in the work area.
