A £500k refurbishment of the footbridge at Carluke Station in South Lanarkshire gets under way this week.

More than 5,000 people use the station each week, with about 75 daily services linking the town to Glasgow and surrounding areas.

The project will repair the concrete structure and supporting steelwork of the bridge that connects platforms 1 and 2. It will also include new lighting, the installation of handrails and anti-slip surfaces on the stairs, and repainting where needed.

To carry out the work safely, the footbridge will be closed from Saturday 15 August until Saturday 14 November. Passengers will be directed between platforms via the underbridge on Station Road, which is currently the accessible route for those unable to use the stairs. Travellers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

Anthony Trodden, scheme project manager at Network Rail, said: "Footbridges are a vital part of stations, and it's important we continue to invest in their upkeep. These improvements will extend the lifespan of the bridge, improve safety and help ensure the footbridge continues to provide a reliable route between platforms.

"We understand this may cause some inconvenience and would like to thank passengers and residents for their patience while these essential improvements are completed."

Overnight activity will run from Saturday to Thursday each week between 15 August and 12 September. From 19 September to 14 November, overnight work will take place on Saturdays only.
