Green Light For Restoration Of Hamilton’s Historic Bothwell Road Bandstand

Construction News Image

Plans to refurbish the historic bandstand in Hamilton's Bothwell Road Park have taken a major step forward following the approval of funding.

Money from South Lanarkshire Council's Local Action Fund and Outdoor Investment Fund will allow the council, working alongside the Bothwell Road Action Group (BRAG), to fully restore the structure, upgrading it to modern standards while preserving its original design and features.

Gifted to the town by John Monteath in 1912, the bandstand has been a focal point in the park for more than 114 years.

Positioned beside the town's War Memorial and set among mature trees, the children's play area and a community sensory garden, it provides a dedicated space for both informal gatherings and formal events.

Councillor Davie McLachlan, Chair of Housing and Technical Resources, said: "I am delighted to see this funding confirmed and the refurbishment now being able to be scheduled.

"This project is a good example of the council's commitment to investing in existing community facilities and, at the same time, working closely with the local community as an integral part of the process.

"The restoration of the bandstand will ensure a part of the town's history is preserved and will enable even more residents to enjoy it for many more years to come."

Peter McGhee, of BRAG, said: "This is fantastic news and we look forward to working with the council to bring this wonderful structure back to its former glory."

Council officers in Housing and Technical Resources are now procuring specialist contractors, with work expected to begin later this year. The park and its other facilities will remain open during the refurbishment.
