A packed programme of maintenance and upgrades is planned across South East Scotland's trunk road network throughout the third quarter of 2026.
Most routes will see resurfacing schemes. While some closures are unavoidable, they will be scheduled overnight wherever feasible to limit disruption. Drainage and safety barrier upgrades are generally deliverable under lane closures, while bridge refurbishment can require temporary signals or more extensive traffic management.
Major activity will refurbish the deck of Galafoot Bridge, which carries the A6091 over the River Tweed south of Galashiels. Works are expected to start in August. During re-waterproofing and resurfacing, the A6091 across the bridge will stay open to westbound traffic only, with signed diversions for eastbound journeys. This arrangement is expected to last six to ten weeks, subject to weather.
On the M90, the refurbishment of Masterton Viaduct at Junction 2 is close to completion and is anticipated to finish around the end of August. Resurfacing is planned near Junction 3 later in the autumn, alongside drainage improvements from Junction 1A to Junction 2. The annual programme of overnight cyclic maintenance on the M90 finished in July, with similar works due on the A823(M) in early August.
On the M8, street-lighting upgrades at Hermiston Gait began in July and will run into October. Resurfacing is scheduled on the eastbound carriageway before Junction 3 and at Hermiston, plus at a number of locations westbound. Drainage and barrier upgrades will proceed under lane closures only.
On the M9, this year's cyclic maintenance is set to begin at the end of August and continue into October. Bridge works are planned near Junction 10, Craigforth, and Junction 1, Newbridge. Resurfacing at Junction 7 southbound is scheduled for late July. Drainage and barrier upgrades are also included.
On the M80, major bridge and gantry replacement is now complete, though overnight road-marking refresh works are planned towards the end of the summer.
On the M876, eastbound resurfacing towards Junction 3 (Bowtrees) will take place at the end of July. Landscaping is planned from Dennyloanhead to Falkirk, with drainage works at Junction 1.
On the A985, deck refurbishment on Kincardine Bridge will start in September, controlled by temporary traffic lights for ten weeks.
On the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass, hard-standing, safety barrier, drainage and retaining wall works are planned near Calder and Baberton, with landscaping in the Bonaly and Torphin areas.
On the A702, resurfacing is planned near Causewayend, Coulter and Flotterstone. Trial measures to improve traffic flow will be introduced at Lothianburn Junction, and drainage improvements are scheduled between Hillend and Nine Mile Burn.
On the A7, resurfacing is programmed around Footsburn, Ashkirk and Canonbie, alongside footway improvements in Selkirk.
On the A68, resurfacing will take place south of Lilliardsedge, south of Lauder, north of Pathhead and on Lauder High Street. Landscaping is planned south of Carfraemill.
On the A1, resurfacing of the Wallyford northbound on-slip is planned for late September. Drainage schemes are scheduled near Grantshouse and Coldingham, with landscaping on the northern section of the route.
