Progress on restoring the bandstand in Bothwell Road Park has moved ahead after the approval of council funding.

Backed by the council's Local Action Fund and Outdoor Investment Fund, the project will see South Lanarkshire Council work alongside the Bothwell Road Action Group (BRAG) to upgrade the structure to modern standards while safeguarding its original character and detailing.

Gifted to the town by John Monteath in 1912, the bandstand has served as a landmark gathering point in the park for more than 114 years.

Set beside Hamilton's War Memorial and surrounded by mature trees, the nearby children’s play area and the community sensory garden, the venue offers space for both informal and formal events.

Councillor Davie McLachlan, Chair of Housing and Technical Resources said: "I am delighted to see this funding confirmed and the refurbishment now being able to be scheduled.

"This project is a good example of the council's commitment to investing in existing community facilities and, at the same time, working closely with the local community as an integral part of the process.

"The restoration of the bandstand will ensure a part of the town's history is preserved and will enable even more residents to enjoy it for many more years to come."

Council officers within Housing and Technical Resources are now seeking specialist contractors, with work anticipated to start later this year. The park and its other amenities will remain open throughout the refurbishment.
