Communities across North Lanarkshire are set to benefit from a £10 million package to enhance leisure, cultural and community facilities, confirmed within the council's 2026/27 budget. The programme will deliver substantial improvements to sports venues, heritage sites, community centres and public spaces.
In Wishaw, work is well under way on replacing the eight-lane running track at the town's sports centre. The £500,000 scheme includes a full resurface using a high-performance, technical Conipur sports surface, alongside significant upgrades to the specialist throwing and high-jump areas. Once complete, the refurbished track will provide a premier training base for Law and District Athletic Club and Motherwell Athletics Club, and play a central role in council athletics camps and local school events.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, said: "We are striving to create modern, accessible spaces where residents can connect, stay active and thrive.
"And this £10million investment demonstrates our long-term commitment to delivering high-quality facilities that meet the needs of local people while strengthening community pride and supporting regeneration across North Lanarkshire."
Across the authority area, eight sports pitches and four pavilions will be resurfaced or upgraded, with schools and community facilities in Cumbernauld, Coatbridge, Motherwell, Wishaw, Shotts and Airdrie set for pitch improvements. The Cleland football pavilion, Harthill pavilion, West End pavilion in Bellshill and the Gartferry/Moodiesburn pavilion will also be upgraded.
Beyond sport, the multi-million-pound investment will support town centres, parks and open spaces, improving local environments while encouraging active lifestyles and community wellbeing.
