BAM UK & Ireland has secured its first commission under the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework, partnering with Siemens Energy to deliver SSEN Transmission's new Greens substation in Aberdeenshire.
The 400kV facility will bolster Scotland's electricity transmission network and help channel more renewable power to homes and businesses across the UK. Agreed through the new ASTI framework, the project is intended to speed up the planning and construction of critical grid infrastructure nationwide.
Greens substation forms part of SSEN Transmission's wider £29bn programme to upgrade the transmission network across the north of Scotland, supporting the growth of clean energy while delivering jobs, infrastructure and long‑term economic benefits for communities in the region. The scheme is expected to create lasting local benefits through supply chain opportunities and targeted community investment in Aberdeenshire.
Adrian Collins, Director of Energy Networks Scotland at BAM UK & Ireland, said: "The UK has a big challenge ahead to reach net zero, and upgrading the electricity transmission network will be crucial in the transition to renewable energy."
Adrian added: "This is BAM's first project as part of the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework, which focuses on enhancing electricity transmission through significant investment, and marks the continuation of our strong working relationship with SSEN Transmission as we support the delivery of critical energy infrastructure across Scotland."
Paul Cooley, Director of Onshore Capital Delivery at SSEN Transmission, commented: "The signing of this contract with BAM and Siemens Energy marks a major step forward for our Greens substation project, and we are delighted to be working in partnership to deliver this vital infrastructure.
"Our focus is on delivering real benefits for local communities, from jobs and apprenticeships to opportunities for local businesses across the north-east, with several already engaged in the project.
"We are also committed to leaving a lasting legacy through community benefit funding and investment in local housing and infrastructure, including new homes in Turriff.
"This project will strengthen the network for the transition to clean energy, and we look forward to main construction getting underway this summer once early works are complete."
