£35m Investment Strengthens Water Network Across the Hebrides

Construction News Image

Scottish Water has successfully completed a £35 million investment programme across the Hebrides, delivering major upgrades to vital infrastructure to safeguard water supplies for the long term.

Over the past five years, the programme was delivered by Scottish Water's alliance partner, Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA). The work focused on replacing and modernising ageing water mains throughout the islands, significantly increasing the resilience of the network and reducing the likelihood of burst pipes and unplanned supply interruptions.

The upgrades ensure that households and businesses in communities such as Tolsta, Bragar, Stornoway County, Bayble, Grimshader, Benbecula, Port of Ness, and the Isle of Skye will continue to receive a reliable supply of high-quality drinking water, even during extreme weather or peak demand.

Peter McMahon, Caledonia Water Alliance Site Manager—who relocated to Stornoway to oversee the delivery—praised the team's resilience. He said: "These projects were delivered in often challenging weather conditions, and I'd like to thank our supply chain partners for their commitment, flexibility and hard work throughout.

"I'd also like to thank local communities and landowners for their cooperation and patience, particularly during periods when temporary water supplies were required to allow the work to be completed safely."

A key element of the programme was the use of local contractors, combining island-based expertise with Scottish Water's resources to ensure the work was carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption.

Rob Mustard, Director of Capital Investment at Scottish Water, added: "By replacing ageing water mains and enhancing the reliability of supplies, we are ensuring that customers across these island communities can continue to rely on high-quality drinking water now and in the future. We are grateful to our delivery partners, local contractors and communities for their support in helping us successfully complete this important programme."

This £35 million investment represents a major commitment to the Hebrides, reinforcing the water network to meet the needs of island residents for decades to come.
