The Lighthouse Charity's 'Make It Visible' team recently visited the AMIDs South construction project in Renfrewshire, marking a significant step in Farrans' ongoing commitment to workforce welfare. The visit involved an interactive session designed to ensure that mental health and emotional wellbeing remain a visible priority for all personnel on-site.
The 'Make It Visible' initiative is a core programme of the Lighthouse Charity, which provides 24/7 free and confidential emotional, physical, and financial support to construction workers and their families. The campaign focuses on breaking down the traditional barriers and stigmas associated with mental health in the sector, ensuring that guidance is accessible to those facing hardship.
During the visit to the South Renfrewshire site, the charity team engaged with workers by sharing personal stories and practical advice to help normalise conversations regarding mental health. The session highlighted the specific challenges often faced by those in the construction industry and stressed the vital importance of seeking help early.
Addressing the historical stigma in the industry is viewed as an essential component of creating a safer working environment. By making support resources highly visible on-site, the initiative aims to ensure that no worker or family member feels isolated during a crisis.
Sarah Bolton, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity, commented on the visit: "We'd like to say a huge thank you to Farran's AMIDs South project team for hosting us and ensuring our message of support reaches their site operatives who may otherwise not know how or where to reach out for support. Through building a positive culture that encourages open conversations, people feel supported and able to reach out for help when they need it without fear of stigma."
The charity provides a comprehensive range of reactive and proactive resources, including a 24/7 helpline, a live web chat service, and a text facility. These are supported by a free self-help app and "Lighthouse Beacons," who offer safe spaces for individuals to share their concerns. Additionally, the charity's Wellbeing Academy provides free leadership and soft skills training to further support the industry.
Farrans has reaffirmed its commitment to workforce wellbeing, promoting a culture where asking for help is viewed as a sign of strength. Workers are encouraged to utilise the available 24/7 support services, which include the UK helpline at 0345 605 1956 or texting "HARDHAT" to 85258.
