Amey, acting on behalf of Transport Scotland, has announced a comprehensive programme of essential bridge investigations and maintenance for the M8 Kingston Bridge Complex. While the project begins on Monday 18 May and runs until Saturday 13 June 2026, the most significant impact will be the 24/7 closure of the M8 Junction 19 Waterloo Street on-slip road from Sunday 24 May until Tuesday 9 June.

Waterloo Street On-Slip Closure & Diversions

During the 24/7 closure, standard traffic will be diverted via West Campbell Street, St Vincent Street, and Newton Street to join the M8 westbound.

However, from the nights of Sunday 24 May to Friday 29 May (9pm to 6am), an alternative night-time diversion will be in effect. This route will direct traffic via Pitt Street, Bothwell Street, Wellington Street, Broomielaw, Bridge Street/Eglinton Street, Nelson Street, Paterson Street, Wallace Street, and Dalintober Street to access the M8 westbound.

Impact on Bus Services

The works will necessitate the temporary relocation of several bus stops on Waterloo Street:

Bottom of Waterloo Street: This stop will close and relocate to the existing stop east of the West Campbell Street junction.

Blythswood Street/West Campbell Street: This stop will relocate to West Campbell Street.

Most bus services will follow a right turn onto Pitt Street, continuing through St Vincent Street and Newton Street to the M8, except during the specific night-time alternative diversion window (24–29 May). Passengers are advised to contact operators such as First Bus, Stagecoach, and McGill’s for specific service updates.

Phased Preparatory and Main Works

The project includes several distinct phases of overnight closures (typically 8pm or 10pm to 6am):

- 18–23 May: Overnight closures of the A804 southbound from Argyle Street to Anderston Quay.

- Saturday 23 May: Full overnight closure of the M8 westbound from Junction 18 (Charing Cross) and the Newton Street on-slip.

- 24–29 May: Overnight closures of the M8 westbound mainline between Junctions 19 and 22, alongside closures of on-slips at Waterloo Street, Newton Street, and Stobcross, plus the Junction 20 off-slip to West Street.

Concluding Works

Demobilisation and final works will take place from Sunday 7 June:

- 7–10 June: Overnight closures of the M8 Junction 18 Charing Cross off-slip and the Newton Street on-slip.

- 8–13 June: Final overnight closures of Newton Street from Argyle Street to Anderston Quay.

Access for emergency services will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. This scheme has been coordinated with Glasgow City Council, SPT, and local businesses including the Hilton Glasgow and Glasgow Marriott Hotel. Road users are urged to allow significant extra time for journeys and consider alternative routes across the M8 corridor.
