SSEN Transmission is scheduled to deliver two new electricity transformers through Killin next week, marking a major phase of the Lochay Transformer Replacement Project. The deliveries, set for Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 May, are part of a wider investment programme to modernise the transmission network and ensure a reliable power supply for the region.
The project is centred at the substation situated adjacent to the Lochay Power Station. These new transformers are essential for maintaining the health of the local grid and facilitating the transmission of renewable energy across Scotland.
The transport route will see the vehicles travel through Killin and across the Dochart Bridge before turning off the A827 to head up the glen toward the substation site. While the transformers are significant in terms of size and weight, they are not classified as abnormal loads. The convoy will be managed by specialist haulier JB Rawcliffe under a pre-agreed traffic management strategy.
SSEN Transmission has worked with local partners to coordinate the movements, and temporary traffic controls will be implemented where necessary to ensure public safety. Traffic will be held briefly during specific manoeuvres and released as soon as it is safe to do so.
Louise Anderson, Lead Community Liaison Manager at SSEN Transmission, commented: "We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by residents and businesses in Killin as we work to deliver this critical upgrade at the Lochay substation. We've worked hard to plan these deliveries carefully, manage traffic safely and keep impacts to a minimum, and we're grateful to the community for their cooperation as we reach this important milestone."
The Lochay Transformer Replacement Project has been under construction since 2023. This latest milestone follows several years of site preparation and infrastructure work at the Glen Lochay facility.
