The Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF) has announced that West College Scotland’s Paisley campus will host the 51st annual Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year (SPAY) competition on 12 June 2026.
Long established as a highlight in Scotland’s apprenticeship calendar, the SPAY competition has served as a vital launchpad for skilled professionals since its inception. Having celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025, the event has showcased the career-defining potential of apprenticeships to more than 1,300 participants throughout its history.
In an era where apprenticeship sustainability faces pressure and the availability of skilled workers is on the decline, organisers believe that nurturing a trusted pipeline of talent is more critical than ever. The competition is designed to provide a platform for the next generation of professionals, highlighting the essential role apprentices play in supporting the national economy, infrastructure, and the nation’s low-carbon ambitions.
During the event, competitors will be challenged across three core disciplines:
- Copper: Assessing precision in pipework.
- Leadwork: Demonstrating traditional craftsmanship.
- Renewable technologies: Showcasing innovative installation solutions.
These categories reflect the diverse and evolving skill sets required by modern plumbing and heating professionals, underscoring the industry's ongoing transition toward sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.
The competition is expected to attract participants from across Scotland’s further education network, along with industry spectators. It offers a unique environment for apprentices to network with peers and industry leaders, reinforcing the importance of the profession in the years to come.
