BEAR Scotland, working on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out essential maintenance on two A82 swing bridges next month, requiring overnight closures from 9.30pm to 6am.

The A82 will be fully closed during working hours while crews operate on the Laggan and Fort Augustus swing bridges. The programme at Laggan is scheduled to start on the evening of Monday 20 April and continue until the morning of Wednesday 22 April. A signed diversion via Spean Bridge using the A9 and A86 will be in place, suitable for all trunk road traffic. Drivers travelling between Inverness and Fort William should allow for an additional 24 miles and around 25 minutes.

Works at Fort Augustus are set to begin on the evening of Wednesday 22 April and finish by the morning of Friday 24 April. During working hours, a signed diversion via Invermoriston to Invergarry using the A87 and A887 will operate. This route is suitable for all trunk road traffic and is expected to add approximately 16 miles and 20 minutes for journeys between Inverness and Fort William.

No alternative cycle route is available during these works. BEAR Scotland has consulted relevant stakeholders and the emergency services in advance.

All activities are weather-dependent and subject to the existing condition of the structures; timings may change or be cancelled once on-site investigations commence.

Richard Cook, BEAR Scotland's North West Bridge Manager said: "The replacement of vital components to maintain and improve the reliability of both bridges is key to ensuring their structural integrity and extend their service life for years to come.

"The works have been planned to minimise disruption to road users, residents, businesses and the local community as far as possible. Some full closures of the road are required to ensure the safety of our workforce and road users. These will be limited to overnight hours to minimise any disruption.
