The regeneration of the historic Meat Market Sheds in Glasgow's East End has received a significant financial boost, with £1 million in new funding allocated to move the project into its next phase.

The additional support comprises £600,000 from the Scottish Government's Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) and £400,000 from Glasgow City Council. This latest injection brings the total RCGF contribution for the project to £3.932 million.

The Meat Market Regeneration Community Interest Company will utilise the funds to develop world-class padel tennis courts within the sheds, alongside the creation of new community and business spaces. The wider 10-hectare site, which has been vacant for over two decades, already hosts 500 new affordable homes. Future plans for the area include a linear park and an active travel route.

The council's contribution of £400,000 is split equally between the Community Asset Fund and the Bringing Property Into Purposeful Use Fund. The project also draws on financial support from the Glasgow City Region City Deal and the Scottish Government's Vacant and Derelict Land Fund.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Built Heritage, Development and Land Use at Glasgow City Council, said: "This project will further transform a key site in Glasgow and bring back to life a part of the city's heritage.

"This project complements the significant amount of regeneration work taking place in this part of the East End, with a huge number of new homes being built and improvements to local streets and spaces. The Meat Market Sheds project is a great example of a project that will benefit local communities economically, environmentally and socially, in a part of Glasgow that is becoming increasingly attractive."

Construction on the next phase of the redevelopment is scheduled to commence in the autumn of 2026.
