Work has officially started on Salamander Yards, a significant residential project located on Salamander Street in the heart of Leith.
The development is being delivered as a joint venture between housebuilder Cruden Homes and MNM Developments, transforming a previous industrial plot into a new mixed-use community.
The project will consist of 99 one, two, and three-bedroom apartments. To address the need for accessible housing in Edinburgh, 35% of these properties have been designated as affordable homes. In addition to the residential units, the development will include two ground-level commercial units designed to support the local business environment.
Designed by 7N Architects, the scheme aims to reflect Leith's industrial heritage through modern design. The plans include landscaped outdoor areas, a private courtyard for residents, and public realm upgrades along Salamander Street. New active travel routes will also be established to improve cycling accessibility in the area.
Situated adjacent to Leith Links, the development offers residents direct access to one of the city's largest green spaces. The location also benefits from proximity to the Edinburgh tram network, established bus routes, and cycle paths, providing links to the city centre.
Fraser Lynes, Chief Executive of Cruden, said: “Salamander Yards is a key contribution to the evolution of Leith Waterfront, helping to shape a vibrant and sustainable place for people to live. Together with our partners at MNM Developments, we are proud to deliver high-quality homes, including much-needed affordable housing, in one of Edinburgh’s most exciting and culturally rich neighbourhoods. Backing onto Leith Links and just moments from the Shore, this development combines green space, connectivity and community in a truly unique setting.”
Marc Teague, Managing Director at MNM Developments, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Cruden to bring Salamander Yards to life. Leith continues to grow as a vibrant, creative and highly desirable place to live and work. This development not only delivers much-needed homes, but also supports the wider regeneration of the waterfront and enhances the strong sense of community that defines the area.”
The first homes at Salamander Yards are expected to be completed in spring 2027.
