Glasgow Announces £119m Major Road Infrastructure Upgrade

Glasgow City Council has launched a comprehensive £119m investment initiative aimed at significantly improving the city's transport network.

The three-year programme targets road carriageways, footways, and street lighting, alongside essential maintenance for road markings, drainage gullies, and street furniture such as barriers and bollards.

A dedicated £20m portion of the funding has been specifically allocated to road carriageways. This additional support will facilitate resurfacing projects across more than 800 streets throughout the duration of the programme. While initial efforts focused on technical preparation, council roads teams have already completed resurfacing on nearly 140 carriageways during the current financial year.

Activity is expected to accelerate in the 2026/27 financial year, with resurfacing planned for over 400 streets. By the conclusion of March 2027, it is projected that 227km of Glasgow's roads and over 230 city footways will have been refurbished. Although the schedule for 2027/28 is still under development, the council anticipates the investment will cover a further 200 road resurfacing projects.

Beyond road surfaces, the programme includes the replacement of 9,000 street lighting columns and the installation of LED lamps across the entire network. Significant engineering works are also planned, including repairs to the Shieldhall viaduct to allow the return of heavy goods vehicles and ongoing maintenance for the Clyde Tunnel. Drainage systems will be improved through a dedicated programme to repair gully pots and pipework, while traffic signals at various city junctions will be modernised.

Councillor Laura Doherty, City Convener for Neighbourhood Services and Assets, said: "As a council we have been listening to the feedback from Glasgow's residents and we know they want a focus on our roads network. The investment package we have put together is substantial and it will make a big difference to the city's roads and footways.

"The extra £20m set aside for carriageway repairs alone is considerable and people will see a noticeable reduction in potholes as a result of the planned investment.

"But the programme also covers a much wider range of work and people will also see clear improvements to street lighting, drainage, road safety measures and traffic lights.

"Our roads network is a top priority for the council. Our investment will help to create a safer, more efficient roads network that benefits all road users."

The investment will be directed toward areas of greatest need, with all 23 council wards expected to benefit from the scheduled works.
