Selkirk Community Invited To Shape 57-Home Heather Mills Development

Residents in Selkirk are being encouraged to help shape proposals for a major housing development on the former Heather Mills site. Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA), working with Smith Scott Mullan Architects and McTaggart Construction, has launched a public consultation ahead of a planning application expected in spring 2026.

Two drop-in sessions will take place from 4–7pm on Wednesday 26 February and Wednesday 26 March at SBHA's Head Office, South Bridge House on Whinfield Road, opposite the proposed site. Attendees can view early-stage proposals, speak to the project team and provide feedback before the submission.

With around 57 homes currently envisaged, the scheme qualifies as a major development. The consultation comes amid acute housing pressures across Scotland.

SBHA Chief Executive Julia Mulloy said: "Scotland is facing a housing emergency, and developments like this are part of the solution. This consultation is an important chance for local people to shape the plans before we submit them in April. We encourage everyone to take part and share their views."

David Chalmers, SBHA Director of Development said: "The homes we are proposing will be safe, warm, and energy-efficient, with a mix to suit different households. We want the development to integrate well with the community, and feedback from this consultation will help ensure it delivers long-term benefits."

Janice Russell, Managing Director at McTaggart Construction commented: "We're proud to be part of this important development for Selkirk. Our commitment is to deliver homes built to the highest standards, while supporting local employment and training opportunities throughout the construction phase.

"We understand the value of working closely with the local community, and we're looking forward to hearing residents' views at the consultation events. Their input will help us ensure we create a development that truly meets local needs and aspirations."

Rick McCluggage, Director at Smith Scott Mullan added: "Our team is pleased to be working again with SBHA and McTaggart, and to be leading the Design Team on this important new residential development in Selkirk.

"We will work collaboratively to design and deliver high-quality, safe, energy-efficient and affordable new homes suitable for families, helping to create a sustainable and vibrant community."

For those unable to attend, draft designs and details will be made available online, with an opportunity to submit comments via an online survey. All feedback will be considered and summarised in the final planning application, due in April.
