Alumno has broken ground on a c. £23m purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) scheme on St George's Road, Glasgow, marking a fresh move to help tackle the city's ongoing shortage of student housing.
The six-storey development, providing 262 beds, will be delivered by main contractor Clark Contracts, which has been appointed to complete the design and build. Representatives from Alumno and the wider professional team attended a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction.
Situated in Glasgow's west end, close to the city centre, the site lies within the Woodlands district, a popular area for students with strong access to local shops, bars, restaurants and cultural venues. The scheme is intended to increase the supply of PBSA in the city, easing demand elsewhere and contributing social and economic benefits to the local community.
The accommodation will feature a mix of four- and five-bed cluster flats alongside studio apartments. Residents will have access to shared amenities including a ground floor common room, sixth-floor dining, study and lounge spaces, and landscaped courtyard areas to the rear.
David Campbell, CEO of Alumno said: "Student accommodation should feel like part of a neighbourhood, not separate from it. This development has been shaped by a deep understanding of Woodlands and is designed to foster a genuine sense of belonging for students while respecting the area's existing character. By focusing on wellbeing, shared spaces and everyday social interaction, we're creating a community that supports students during a pivotal stage of their lives, while also bringing lasting social and economic benefits to the wider area."
Michael Scanlan, Director at Clark Contracts, commented: "We are pleased to be working alongside Alumno and the wider professional team to bring this development forward and look forward to seeing it progress on site. This project further builds on our strong track record within the PBSA sector, having delivered over 1,400 student beds in recent years."
The project is funded by Henderson Park, with the professional team including Stallan Brand Architects, RankinFraser Landscape Architecture, Will Rudd Davidson, Ridge and Partners and Sound Advice Acoustics. Completion is scheduled ahead of the 2027 academic year.
