West Lothian Council Executive has been asked to formalise the delivery programme for the new Craigshill Primary, a modern educational hub set to be built on the site of the former Riverside Primary.
If the final plans are approved, construction is scheduled to commence in April 2026.
The project involves a three-storey building designed to accommodate 462 pupils, merging the existing student bodies of Letham and Riverside primary schools. In addition to primary education, the facility will feature:
- An integrated early years centre.
- Dedicated external play areas and landscaping.
- On-site car parking.
The total cost of the development is now estimated at £25.8 million, following a budget increase of £1.8 million. This rise is attributed to complex ground conditions and additional expenses related to the demolition of the original Riverside building, which was closed in 2023 due to the presence of Reinforced Aerated Autoclaved Concrete (RAAC) and asbestos.
Funding is being provided through a joint partnership between West Lothian Council and the Scottish Government’s Learning Estate Investment Programme (LEIP).
The construction phase is expected to last approximately 15 months. Under the current proposed timeline, the new Craigshill Primary will open its doors to pupils and staff for the start of the academic term in August 2027.
