BEAR Scotland has announced a substantial schedule of investment and improvement works across the North West trunk road network.
Delivered on behalf of Transport Scotland, the upcoming projects are designed to bolster safety, increase network resilience, and improve the overall experience for road users.
Following preparatory investigations conducted in 2025, a major overhaul of the A9 Raigmore Interchange is currently in progress. The works, which are scheduled to run until the summer of 2026, include the installation of permanent traffic signals and improvements to active travel facilities. To mitigate delays at this high-traffic junction, lane closures are limited to overnight hours. During the day, lane widths have been narrowed to maintain traffic flow while providing a safe working environment.
In April 2026, a £2.8 million structural project will begin on the A835 at Loch Garve. This complex engineering task involves replacing a damaged retaining wall with a 108-metre concrete beam structure anchored by steel rods. The design, which ensures both the road and the adjacent railway remain operational, includes a new safety barrier with a 120-year service life. Temporary traffic lights will remain in place at the site until the project concludes in November 2026.
In Inverness, a 12-week scheme is underway on the A82 at Glenurquhart Road to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. The project focuses on widening and resurfacing the southbound footpath, upgrading crossing points and traffic islands, and improving drainage at private access points. These works align with national objectives to encourage walking and wheeling for daily travel.
Furthermore, a wide-ranging resurfacing programme is planned for the routes between Oban and Fort William. Targeted improvements will take place at Glencoe, Onich, and various sections of the A82, A828, and A85. Most of these surfacing projects will be conducted overnight to reduce the impact on commuters and local businesses.
These combined efforts represent a significant commitment to maintaining the reliability of the North West's vital transport links, providing long-term benefits for the region's residents and visitors.
