Burial Ground And Iron Age Homes Discovered During Sewer Works

A significant archaeological site has been unearthed in the Highlands during a routine infrastructure project to upgrade the local sewer network.

The discoveries, made at Windhill, include two Iron Age roundhouses and a burial ground featuring three "barrow" monuments, one of which is believed to date back to the 6th century AD.

The find occurred within a 90-metre section of a trench excavated by the Caledonia Water Alliance, Scottish Water's delivery partner. Alongside the residential and funerary structures, teams discovered well-preserved metalworking furnaces and various stone tools, including hammerstones and rotary querns used for grinding grain.

Archaeologists noted the rare discovery of decorated clay daub from the roundhouse walls, featuring chevron designs. While no pottery was found—supporting the theory that Iron Age inhabitants in this region utilised organic vessels made of wood—the presence of smelting furnaces built against a large boulder suggests a sophisticated industrial presence.

Steven Birch, Archaeologist at West Coast Archaeological Services, said: "The excavations carried out at Windhill have revealed a complex suite of archaeological features within a relatively small area."

He added: "Full analysis of the samples, finds and other materials will provide additional information relating to a snapshot into the early history of the area, adding to a growing core of evidence to suggest that the area around the Beauly Firth provided a suitable locale for settlement, industrial and funerary practices."

Project Manager Scott Henry described the site as the most exciting find of his career. He stated: "It has been incredible to find out what was discovered near our sewer upgrade project. I have worked on many projects across the whole of Scotland and this has to be the most exciting find to date."

Mr Henry continued: "From desktop studies before, we had an idea of what could be found but didn't know it would such an amazing discovery. We always follow the correct procedures and ensure archaeologists are present when they need to be to ensure discoveries are protected and recorded from our sewer upgrade works."

The furnaces, which likely date to the first few centuries AD, were located outside the main living quarters due to the heat and fumes they produced. Steven Birch noted: "The evidence for metalworking at the site, which most likely took place during the first few centuries AD will form an important addition to the archaeological record for this area."

Bone fragments recovered from the burial pits are currently undergoing radiocarbon dating. Experts hope that further DNA and isotope analysis will provide insights into the health and diets of these ancient inhabitants.

The sewer upgrade project, designed to mitigate flooding risks and pipe bursts, was completed in July 2025.
