The construction of the new £18.3 million Balgray Station has reached a pivotal stage following the successful installation of its footbridge and lifts.
Located in East Renfrewshire, the station is designed to support the expanding community of Barrhead and enhance rail links to and from Glasgow.
Since the project broke ground in July 2025, engineers have made rapid progress on the station's infrastructure, including the platforms and a dedicated car park. The newly installed footbridge serves as a vital link between platforms, while the addition of lifts ensures full step-free access for all passengers.
With the core structure now in place, the project team will shift focus to completing the station buildings and surrounding facilities. Future works include the installation of cycle parking, electric vehicle charging points, and accessible parking bays. Additionally, a new footpath will be created to provide a direct connection to the nearby Dams to Darnley Country Park.
The station is a key component of the Glasgow City Region City Deal, receiving investment from the Scottish Government, the UK Government, and East Renfrewshire Council. The delivery of the project is a collaborative effort between Network Rail, East Renfrewshire Council, Transport Scotland, ScotRail, and Story Contracting.
Ashley McDonald, scheme project manager at Network Rail Scotland, said: "Strengthening rail connections in East Renfrewshire gives people another practical, reliable alternative to travelling by car. Better links mean shorter journeys, improved access to jobs and education, and simpler everyday travel.
"Installing the footbridge and lifts has really brought the station together. It means we can now start focusing on the details that will ensure it's ready to welcome passengers later this year."
East Renfrewshire Council leader Owen O'Donnell added:
"I'm delighted that that this major project milestone has been completed as this is such an important step in progress towards the new rail service. Balgray station is set to be a very welcome addition for our growing community in Barrhead, making it much easier for residents and visitors to travel to and from Barrhead and Dams to Darnley Country Park using public transport."
