SSEN Transmission Revise A832 Road Plans

SSEN Transmission has announced two public information events this January to provide updates on revised traffic management plans for the A832. The works, which are essential for the installation of the Western Isles HVDC cable, have been modified following extensive consultations with the local community.

The project team will be available to discuss early enabling works and the associated traffic measures on the following dates:

• Wednesday 7 January: 6pm – 8pm at Aultbea Hall, Aultbea, Achnasheen, IV22 2JR.

• Thursday 8 January: 6pm – 8pm at Badcaul Church, Dundonnell, IV23 2QY.

Originally, plans involved a full closure of a 4.7km section of the route during working days. However, under the new 18-month proposal, the project will instead utilise single-lane closures on short 500-metre sections. This phase is scheduled to begin on Monday 19 January, moving south from Dundonnell to Fain Bridge.

During the day, a convoy system with manned traffic lights will be in operation to manage flow, reverting to standard traffic lights overnight. These works will facilitate tree felling and the upgrading or replacement of culverts along the cable route.

Looking ahead to summer 2026, a full night-time closure will be required for several weeks to complete work where space is too limited for a bypass. During these specific windows, a diversion via Gairloch will be implemented.

Niall Macleod, Project Director for SSEN Transmission, commented: "We'd like to thank all those who kindly took the time to provide feedback to our initial proposals, which we have responded to with revised plans that will allow us to deliver this essential work safely while minimising impacts on the local community and other road users.

"Following our last round of information events in October we're pleased to be holding these additional events, that will share more detailed information on the early enabling works and associated traffic management required as part of the project as we prepare for the single-lane closure beginning on Monday, 19 January.

"We remain fully committed to ongoing engagement with road users, local communities and stakeholders, and we look forward to welcoming people to our events taking place on 7 and 8 January."
