SSEN Transmission has awarded Hitachi Energy major contracts to supply high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations for two subsea power links: the already consented Spittal–Peterhead connection between Caithness and Aberdeenshire, and a proposed link from the Western Isles to the Scottish mainland.
The decision follows Hitachi Energy's selection as preferred bidder in 2023 and subsequent appointment under a framework intended to speed the UK's clean-energy transition. The contracts span design, procurement, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of the HVDC converter technology.
The award underlines SSEN Transmission's commitment to deliver social value alongside critical grid upgrades. In November, the company became the first to sign the Highland Social Value Charter, promising a range of benefits for communities across the Highlands as part of its £22bn+ investment programme, including local contracting, investment in roads and bridges, support for housing, community benefit funding and a net gain in biodiversity.

The Western Isles scheme will allow renewable electricity generated on the islands to be exported to, and imported from, the mainland grid, while the Spittal–Peterhead link will create a strategic transmission corridor across the north of Scotland. Both projects form part of SSEN Transmission's wider £22bn+ plan to reinforce the northern Scotland network to meet energy security and clean power goals.

For the Spittal–Peterhead link, the Banniskirk (Spittal) and Netherton Hub (Peterhead) converter stations have planning consent and the marine licence is in place, with full construction due to begin shortly. For the Western Isles link, the Lewis Hub (Stornoway) has received planning consent, a planning application for the Fanellan converter station near Beauly is before Highland Council, and a marine licence application has been lodged.
Subject to remaining approvals, both subsea links are expected to be energised by 2030, adding vital capacity to move clean, secure and affordable electricity across Scotland and to consumers throughout Great Britain.
